A difficult conversation

My beautiful wife had the occasion to accompany me to work one day.  I asked her to bring her camera along in case she found anything of interest to be her subject.  The result of the experience, however, was a very difficult conversation.  She has given me permission to publish her photos to assist this narrative.

"Do you think she knows she pregnant?"

"I imagine that she does.  She's near full term.  I'm sure she feels them moving. It's hard to know how much of motherhood is cognitive and how much is instinctive in dogs.  Do you feel you could have known about your babies during your third trimester had you not been told?"

"Yes."

"This is the hard part for me because as I'm pulling the uterus out of the body, I can feel the babies."

"Do they move?"

"Sometimes."

"And sometimes I can see them through the uterus.  See, like this one's nose."

I watch as a tear falls down my wife's face.

"So how do they die?"

"Well, they are somewhat anesthetized from the drugs I've given their mother.  Often, especially early term, they die in utero from lack of blood supply.  The bigger ones we have to euthanize."

"Do you think they know....that they are dying?"

Another tear slowly follows the trail down her cheek left from the one before.  Her sadness fills the room.

"I don't think so.  I hope that they are very sleepy from the drugs."

"So perfectly made," She says through her tears.  "Do they go to heaven?"

Long.  Uncomfortable.  Pause.

"Do you believe that pets go to heaven?  Have you ever thought about it," I asked.

"Well, No I haven't thought about it."

Sadly, I was raised to believe that animals have no soul. I was taught that heaven was a place for the souls who believed in Jesus Christ.  I believe that my wife was raised similarly.

"Do you think that animals have a soul?"

"I don't know.  I think they can love and hate.  I think they can be kind and caring."

"Do you think they can know wrong from right?"

"Yes.  I think I've seen more soul in some animals than I have in some people."

"Me too."

"Do you think that animals have to believe in Christ to get to heaven?"

"I don't know.  Do you think maybe there's a separate place for them?  Like a dog heaven or cat heaven?"

"I don't think we can know.  We can only hope.  But if so, I'm sure these guys will be there, because they've done no wrong here."

"Yep.  It's not their fault.  Why didn't the owner just let her have them?"

"Well, babe, this owner has already taken two litters to the shelter this year.  And they were most likely euthanized.  It's pretty surprising that he's even getting this one spayed.  I would rather them go this way than the other."

"How often does this happen?"

"Every week.  In the summer, there are days we euthanize more babies than the number of dogs and cats walking out the door."

"That's horrible."

"I know.  It's a regional problem.  Can you believe that in places other than the southeast US they actually have to ship in strays to adopt because they have no stray animal problems.  They don't have things like kill shelters where hundreds die every month.  They don't do things like this."

"Wow.  It's so....preventable."

"Yes," as tears well up in my eyes.  "Yes, it is."

  2. Thank you Todd for posting this. It is so hard to watch this happen day after day, and so many times people don,t get what they are asking us to do. I've often thought if they could see this... why didn't they bring them in sooner? and then to watch the Mother when she wakes up. Most of them are obviously sad. It is so hard to watch.

  3. When I think of Heaven I think of a perfect place. Who's to say that it won't be perfectly tailored to each individual. The Bible only gives a tiny glimpse into what heaven will be like. God gave you a heart of love for animals. When you reach heaven it maybe filled with animals for you.It maybe filled with music for someone that loved music. God knows each heart,He knows what would feel our hearts with joy in every way. My vote is Heaven will be customized for everyone.

  5. While not Christian, I was raised Baptist. The idea that there would be no animals in heaven is one I could never fathom. What kind of heaven would it be without animals? No heaven I would want to go be in!

  6. Very touching, although we differ in our religious beliefs. I'll definitely be sharing this with classmates of mine.

  7. I was raised Baptist as well, but I am an atheist. The idea of animals and non-Christians not going to heaven contributed to my rejecting the church entirely as a young child, and leaving it as soon as I left my parents' house.

Speaking now as a veterinarian, I'm reminded that my patients are perfect and innocent. Wherever our energy goes after we die, I have to believe there will be peace.

  8. I believe that animals don't have a soul but they do have a spirit. So, they don't require Christ to take away sin because an animal cannot sin. So, when they do die, their spirit leaves their body and they go to heaven. That is my belief anyway.

  9. Hey there. I seem to believe that there will be animals in Heaven. The Lord says the lions will lie down with the lambs. But wether or not the animals on earth go there, I think it's impossible for us to say. I sure do pray so. The Lord Jesus has a great and mighty plan for each of us. And for those of us who love animals, I wonder if He will give us some in our eternal home. I love Jesus, and I know whatever He gives me will be best for me. I am thankful for the creatures we have while we are on this earth and I pray that somehow people will learn to control problems like this. It puts vets in an awkward situation doesn't it? Hmmm... if only people knew!

  11. I wish that people really understood how hard the pet overpopulation is on veterinarians and their staff. We are placed in charge of either losing money on spaying animals for less than it costs us or euthanizing hundreds of animals a month. No wonder we have such a high suicide rate. Every time someone wants to breed their dog, I go into great detail about how much money they need to have saved in case of problems, how they need to be prepared for animals coming out as mutants, and then that while they think about their decision, they should volunteer at the animal shelter and help euthanize healthy animals. The "miracle of birth" quickly becomes the miracle of death.

  12. I am a Christian and in my heart believe that the idea that animals don't go to Heaven is hogwash. It's a man-made thought. God created these wonderful little creatures who are part of our lives and our families. Maybe the Bible doesn't say it but that doesn't mean it's not so, unless it were to say otherwise. I can not imagine a loving God, like the One I believe in, would not have a special place with us in Eternity.

  14. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and beliefs.
@Carra-whether pups sell well depends on the where and the what kind. You are right about where the problem comes in.
